The short answer: 14 boosts for level 3, the highest level a Discord server can reach. But the number alone is not much use. What matters is what you gain at each tier, and what makes you lose it.
The three tiers
- Level 1: 2 boosts
- Level 2: 7 boosts
- Level 3: 14 boosts
The boosts have to be active at the same time. That is the most common mistake: no, two boosts a month for seven months does not give you level 2. You need seven boosts on the server at the same moment.
What each level unlocks
Level 1 (2 boosts)
- Audio quality up to 128 kbps
- Screen sharing in 720p 60fps
- Animated server icon
- Custom invite background
- More emoji and sticker slots
Level 2 (7 boosts)
- 256 kbps audio
- Screen sharing in 1080p 60fps, the real argument for gaming servers
- Server banner
- Even more emoji and sticker slots
- A higher upload limit for every member
Level 3 (14 boosts)
- 384 kbps audio
- A custom link,
discord.gg/yourserver(the "vanity URL") - Animated banner
- The maximum number of emoji and sticker slots
- The highest upload limit
Discord changes these perks now and then; the 2 / 7 / 14 tiers themselves haven't moved in years.
What it costs
At the official price, a boost runs around €5 a month:
- Level 1: 2 boosts, ~€10
- Level 2: 7 boosts, ~€35
- Level 3: 14 boosts, ~€70
A Nitro subscription includes boosts and may offer a discount on additional boosts. Compare the current official total with the exact reseller offer. See how to get boosts for less for the comparison checklist.
The mistakes that cost a level
- Thinking boosts add up over time. They count simultaneously, never month after month.
- Forgetting that a cancelled boost stops at the end of the paid period. The server drops a tier without warning, and the vanity URL is the first thing to go.
- Moving a boost too soon. When a boost changes server, it is locked for several days before it can move again.
- Counting on members who boost "to try". A boost given for one month disappears the next: leave yourself room if your level hangs on a single booster.
Keeping your level without thinking about it
If the server lives on its events, the simplest thing is to pay for boosts in three-month blocks rather than month by month: fewer renewals to watch, and a lower price per unit. And always keep one spare boost above the tier: the day somebody stops, you don't lose the banner and the custom link in the middle of a game night.
In short
2, 7, 14. Level 3 needs 14 boosts active at the same time; that is what gives you the custom discord.gg link and the best audio.
